Past Battles - 1997

[From Traditional Values Coalition* January '98 letter to supporters]

* The House of Representative overrode the President's veto of the Partial Birth Abortion Ban! Our legislators are finally realizing the devastating consequences of abortion.

* We have dramatically raised public visibility on worldwide religious persecution.

* Numerous bills concerning school choice have been introduced in both the House and Senate. With the level of activity in Congress on this issue, I am confident that real strides will be made allowing parents to place their child in a good school.

* Congress has put a halt - at least temporarily - to Bill Clinton's National Testing for our nation's children. There would be enormous consequences if decisions for our educational institutions were moved from our local communities to out-of-touch liberal bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.

* The Senate shut down a hearing on the Homosexual Quota Bill, S 869, after 50 minutes, based on a special Senate rule. Under this bill, churches and Christian businesses would have been forced to violate their moral beliefs and promote homosexuality in their churches and businesses.

We fought hard to abolish the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) but the Senate put the money back in; we fought to decrease funding for abortion, but the Senate joined by liberal House Republicans increased it. We fought to override President Clinton's veto of partial-birth abortion but again we do not have enough votes in the Senate for the override vote. I guess you can see where the problem lies. But we were there and TVC and other pro-life forces did win enough to pass the bill in the House. It is just that the override vote requires a 2/3rd vote of Senate.
