Senate Committee Approves Anti-Porn Bill.
On Thursday, March 13, the Senate Commerce Committee approved two bills that attempt to curb the amount of Internet pornography that gets to minors. Sen. Dan Coats (R-IN) is the sponsor of a bill (S. 1482) that would require commercial distributors of porn to remove any "teaser" images displaying pornographic images unless the user first provides a credit card, adult access code, or PIN number. The bill will put some of the burden to keep porn away from minors on the distributor. Another bill (S. 1619), also approved by the Senate Commerce Committee, and introduced by its chairman, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), would require public schools and libraries to take reasonable measures to block or filter material inappropriate for minors in order to receive federally-subsidized Internet access. Each day, children are faced with the possibility of accessing hard-core pornography in their schools and libraries. Sen. McCain’s bill would take a first step in protecting children from on-line porn. Both bills will soon be considered in the full Senate. Please call your senators and urge them to support the Coats’ (S. 1482) and McCain (S. 1619) efforts to keep Internet porn away from children. The Capitol switchboard number for the Senate is 202-224-3121.
