The Eastside Journal
Dear Sir:
In his Monday, November 18th column, Lake Washington School District Superintendent Ron Barnes calls the community to celebrate American Education Week by reflecting "on the central role that schools play in our country." After reading about kindergartners "researching?" a "citizen of the sea?," seventh graders "creating their own country?" and student teams creating "business cards for interested staff" at their high school, pray tell, can they read, write and cipher or has the "central role" of schools evolved beyond that old fashioned standard?
