EXPORTING ABORTION IS AN UNPRINCIPLED POLICY, BAUER SAYS

REJECTS CLINTON'S EFFORT TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT ON TRADE BILL'S FAILURE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Family Research Council President Gary Bauer charged Monday that "President Clinton is more committed to exporting abortion to every corner of the globe than he is to promoting one of his top economic priorities. Once again we see the President's radical social agenda trumping every other domestic or foreign policy issue."

Bauer made his remarks following President Clinton's announcement Monday that a congressional vote on "fast track" trade legislation has been shelved for the year. "Mr. Clinton sought to deflect attention from the fact that barely one- quarter of the members of his own party trusted him to keep his word on trade negotiation strategy," Bauer said. "Instead, he sought to cast his failure as a 'principled' defense of U.S. taxpayer funding of international population control programs that promote abortion as a method of family planning.

"At a time when the media are reporting that the President is engaged in every imaginable form of horse trading to try to secure congressional votes for the fast track bill, it is highly ironic that Mr. Clinton should suggest that his administration's militant worldwide promotion of abortion on demand is the one issue of 'principle' on which he will not compromise," Bauer said.

"The Clinton administration's insistence on forcing abortion into every element of America's health care system contributed substantially to Mr. Clinton's largest domestic policy failure in 1993," Bauer said. "Four years later we see the President attributing one of his largest foreign policy failures to his intransigence on promoting abortion on demand worldwide. There is nothing noble about trampling on the cultural and religious beliefs of people in foreign nations. Likewise, there is nothing 'principled' about contributing to the destruction of millions of unborn babies at every stage of pregnancy, for virtually any reason."
